A patient-centered approach to applying guidelines for treating tobacco dependence Copeland AL, Brandon TH
Physicians can greatly improve the health outcomes of patients who use tobacco by applying current guidelines for treating tobacco dependence. This article reviews addiction assessment and intervention strategies for both willing and resistant tobacco users who present in a primary care setting. Drawing from a recently updated national guideline for treating tobacco dependence, the authors use a series of physician-patient encounters to illustrate how specific guideline recommendations might be applied to an actual patient. A patient-centered approach that focuses on specific patient characteristics is recommended.
