Overcoming barriers to using asthma clinical practice guidelines
Cabana MD, Lewis TC
In the contemporary health care system, clinical practice guidelines are increasingly used to reduce inappropriate variation and to improve the quality and consistency of care, especially for patients with chronic diseases. Although many guidelines are evidence based and peer reviewed, physicians sometimes do not or cannot follow them. With a focus on asthma guidelines, the authors identify barriers to guideline use and offer suggestions for overcoming them.
