Continuous quality improvement (CQI) is used throughout health care as a tool to achieve desired results such as better patient satisfaction, improved clinical outcomes, and reduced costs. The authors explore basic principles of CQI and describe how these have been successfully applied in a clinical pathways program at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.
