This article uses a patient scenario as the basis for examining how to take an evidence-based approach to deciding whether it is worthwhile to screen a patient for disease. The authors examine several evidence-based medicine concepts including principles of screening healthy populations, where to find evidence to guide screening decisions, how to appraise a research article on a screening test, and how to approach a decision about screening when the evidence is incomplete.
