Utilization management morning report: purpose planning, and early experience in a university hospital residency program Kane GC, Holumzer C, Sorokin R
Although utilization management (UM) is a central skill in contemporary medical practice, finding an interesting and relevant way to incorporate UM into residency training programs is a challenge. The faculty of the internal medicine residency program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital created an innovative morning report devoted to UM. The authors focus on a description of a session where UM principles are applied to a case of dyspepsia. The authors also describe the implementation and impact of the program after a full academic year and provide observations and recommendations for other institutions interested in developing similar programs.
