Professionalism: Doc, just one more thing Lemon MR, Egan EA
At times, competing demands of the current health care system may make it difficult for physicians to always place patients’ interests first. Recent concern about eroded professional standards has spurred efforts to reaffirm the traditional values of the medical profession and to define new principles to guide modern practice. Important examples include the public release of the Charter on Medical Professionalism and the increased emphasis on evaluating professionalism in residency. This article initiates a new journal feature devoted to examining dilemmas physicians may face in trying to live up to the Charter. The authors explore issues that may arise when the physician-patient relationship is affected by the diverse set of insurance plans that make up the health care landscape.
