Tips for communicating with patients in managed care

Effective communication has never been more important than in the current managed care environment, where the physician-patient relationship and patient participation in decision making are critical. Although a traditional, authoritative approach to communication is sometimes appropriate, a more collaborative approach often can produce better health outcomes, especially when patient lifestyle changes are required. The authors review basic principles of good communication and provide tips for collaborative communication in a managed care practice environment.
