Making medical decisions under uncertainty
The daily practice of medicine requires physicians to make myriad decisions without definitive supporting evidence. Often both physicians and patients are unfamiliar with the sources of medical uncertainty, and suboptimal patient care may result. The author examines common difficulties of managing uncertainty in medical practice and offers practical strategies for reducing uncertainty, including tips on how to use measures of relative and absolute risk to communicate with patients and to make clinical decisions.
