Teaching health communication in a family medicine residency program: report of a work in progress
Manning B, Sauereisen S, Last A, Matheus R, Slaymaker E, Jozwiak BJ
There is increasing evidence from a variety of studies linking effective health communication with improved quality and outcomes of patient care. However, achieving these results requires that physicians bring to the clinical encounter an understanding of key communication-related skills, knowledge, and attitudes. This article describes an ongoing effort of one family practice residency program to provide health communication training to its residents. Lessons learned from the authors’ attempts to bring clinical relevance to health communication competence should be useful to all residents.
