Instruments of change: three medical directors describe their evolving role
Kircher KJ, McEvoy V, Baird M

The forces of change that are reshaping the face and organization of health care have given rise to a new form of physician leader: the medical director. In the current managed care dominated environment, medical directors are challenged to monitor and improve the quality of care while providing greater stewardship of resources. Physicians in full-time practice may not fully appreciate the skills and knowledge needed to perform these functions, and the medical literature provides little insight into the professional role and responsibilities of medical directors. Drawing on their collective experience, the authors offer an inside look at the major functions of medical directors and the unique skills and attributes needed to be effective in the role. The authors also touch upon the medical director’s dilemma of balancing the health needs of individual patients with those of the overall population served by a health care organization.
