Reconciling doctor and patient agendas: a case illustration
Shapiro J, Yu R, White MK
The authors present transcribed excerpts from an audiotaped encounter between a physician and a patient who was recently hospitalized for a diabetic complication. The interview illustrates the unfortunate results of neglecting to reconcile conflicting doctor and patient agendas: the physician and patient both leave the office visit frustrated, with little progress made toward improving the patientís condition. At key points in the interview, the authors comment on the exchange and suggest alternative approaches the physician might have used to advance a common agenda.
