Applying evidence to the care of an adult with a first-time seizure: how to estimate prognosis
Robbins BW

Information on the prognosis of disease provides the structural backbone for clinical care decisions. Having an evidence-based estimate of the prognosis for specific disease outcomes allows clinicians to be more specific when counseling patients and making clinical decisions on patientsí behalf. Using the scenario of a healthy young woman with a first-time unprovoked seizure, the author demonstrates how to obtain and incorporate available medical evidence when faced with estimating prognosis for a specific disease outcome (in this case, seizure recurrence). Also discussed are the best research studies for providing prognostic information and the steps involved in appraising and applying a published study of prognosis.
