Approach to teaching practice-based learning and improvement on the wards Whelan CT, Podrazik PM, Johnson JK
. Competency in practice-based learning and improvement (PBLI) requires physicians to document, review, assess, and improve their clinical practice. Teaching these skills poses several challenges. Yet, teaching opportunities are likely to arise every day during the course of inpatient clinical care, making it possible to use a case-based approach to teach PBLI skills on the wards. This article uses a fictitious case example to highlight PBLI learning opportunities and to frame a discussion of strategies for bedside teaching focused on applying an evidence-based medicine approach to patient/population-specific health problems, analyzing one’s practice performance, and performing practice-based improvement activities.
