Mature cystic teratomas are ovarian germ cell tumors that are diploid and have a normal 46,XX karyotype. They are thought to originate in the ovarian germ cell after the first meiotic division. The immature teratoma or malignant type of this tumor may have an aneuploid component similar to that of testicular germ cell tumors.
