Acyclovir 5% ointment applied to lesions 5 times daily for 5 days.
Topically applied acyclovir is indicated only for initial episodes of genital herpes. This treatment has little or no effect on recurrences of the disease. All of the other regimens listed are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for treatment of recurrent genital herpes.
