- Graves disease.
Graves disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism, accounting for 60% to 80% of cases of hyperthyroidism. The most common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include nervousness, fatigue, palpitations, weight loss, and heat intolerance. RAIU scans are very useful in differentiating between thyroid diseases of increased thyroxin synthesis (eg, Graves disease), which show increased uptake, and diseases of inflammation and release of thyroxin (eg, thyroiditis), which show decreased uptake.
