Educate patient about the disease and have him follow-up in clinic in a few weeks.
Since this was the patients first attack of gout, there is no need for prophylactic therapy with low-dose colchicine. Also, colchicine should be used cautiously in patients with renal disease because of the risk of side effects. Urate-lowering therapy with allopurinol or probenecid should never be started at the time of an acute attack, as it can prolong the attack.
