The synovial fluid reveals classic findings of acute gout. Pseudogout is characterized by weakly positive, birefringent rhomboid-shaped crystals. A negative Gram stain makes septic arthritis unlikely. There was not a significant amount of blood in the fluid to diagnose hemarthrosis.
