Joint aspiration would be the most useful test in differentiating between septic arthritis and other acute inflammatory arthropathies, such as gout and pseudogout. While a radiograph, MRI, or bone scan may show evidence of inflammation, traumatic injury, or chronic arthritic changes, they will not give the definitive diagnosis in an acute monoarthritis.
