The olecranon bursa lies over the olecranon process of the elbow. Inflammation of this bursa can result from constant elbow pressure or repeated use. Olecranon bursitis typically results in painful swelling of the olecranon bursa, although sometimes the swelling is painless. The patient with bursitis typically is involved in manual labor, such as carpentry or construction work, that leads to repetitive trauma of the elbow.
