Patients in stage A are at high risk for developing heart failure but have no structural disorder of the heart. Patients in Stage B have a structural heart disease that is strongly associated with development of heart failure but lack symptoms of heart failure. Patients with stage C heart failure have underlying structural heart disease with current or prior symptoms. Patients with stage D heart failure have end-stage disease with marked symptoms even at rest on maximal medical therapy.
