An 18-Month-Old Child with a Previously Undiagnosed Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorder
Answer 2
Alcohol ingestion.
Alcohol ingestions in children are associated with hypoglycemia. Acetaminophen ingestions are not associated with changes in glucose concentrations. (Salicylate ingestions, however, are associated with hypoglycemia.) Closed head injuries are not associated with hypoglycemia; patients are usually euglycemic, or occasionally hyperglycemic. Hyperglycemia is associated with a poor outcome in children with closed head injuries. New-onset diabetes is associated with hyperglycemia.
