The serum magnesium level plays a role in the secretion of parathyroid hormone. Initially, a low serum magnesium level causes an increase in parathyroid hormone secretion; chronic hypomagnesemia, however, will result in decreased secretion of parathyroid hormone. All of the other factors listed are involved in calcium regulation, but they do not have clinically significant effects on the secretion of parathyroid hormone.
