A Child with an Abdominal Mass
 |
Answer 1
- Patients ethnicity.
Although some intra-abdominal disease entities may have ethnic predominance, this information does not help in narrowing the list of possible etiologies. Age is an important consideration as neonates differ from older children in terms of the differential diagnosis for an abdominal mass. In girls, masses originating from the ovaries (eg, cysts) should be included in the differential diagnosis. The location of the mass might point toward the organ of origin. Percussion helps differentiate solid masses and fluid-filled cysts from air-filled structures.
