Sensorineural hearing loss is the most common morbidity associated with bacterial meningitis and is more likely to occur from Streptococcus pneumoniae than other bacterial agents. All children should therefore undergo routine hearing screening after diagnosis. The other sequelae listed are also associated with meningitis but are less common than hearing loss.
