Postmenopausal hormone replacement therapy - where are we now?

The role of postmenopausal hormone use in cardiovascular disease and breast cancer remains controversial, with results from recent randomized clinical trials conflicting with previous observational and biological studies demonstrating cardioprotective effects. Recent data from the Women’s Health Initiative raise new questions about the association between hormone use and risk of breast cancer. The authors analyze the issues and offer guidelines for counseling patients.
