Facilitators and barriers involved in conducting hospital-based research across multiple sites

Abstract Objective: To describe and elaborate upon lessons learned during a 2-year collaborative research study involving 3 hospital groups in 3 states. Methods: Review and analysis of field notes and transcripts of focus group interviews. Results: Several themes were identified in the review. Differences among sites, such as in regard to resources and experience, can enhance performance capacity and project success, but they also impose challenges. Clarification of goals and expectations is important, and effective and efficient communication is essential. Flexibility and open-mindedness promote collaboration, and keeping to an established time line is important when busy practitioners are involved. A personable, respected champion can enhance the research effort. Conclusion: The struggles encountered and resolutions discovered may offer guidance for other hospitalist groups conducting hospital-based research across multiple sites.
