First steps in quality improvement: a pilot program for the management of acute sickle cell pain

An intervention for sickle cell pain crisis that included a clinical pathway, education of professional and nonprofessional staff, and case management was evaluated. Implementation of the pathway produced improvements in processes and outcomes of care, including reduced hospital length of stay and faster time to pain relief.
